Here I am at an Otago rugby match on Saturday, August 18, 2002. It turned out to be more or less the coldest day I've had here so far (and I had forgotten my gloves). Otago defeated Northland, but I forget the score. Yep, those are the Otago colors! Blue and gold - just like those good old B-A Blue Devils! |

Hello everyone! Well, I've made it through another week. This past week was a bit stressful, but
it's so nice to have reached the weekend. Other than a flurry of assignments due, this week really
wasn't all that bad I suppose. I finally bought some speakers. On Wednesday morning, Paul and I
walked for what seemed like forever to the place I wanted to get them from. It was cool to have a
good, long chat with Paul though because I hadn't hung out with him in a while. It is nice to finally be able to
hear my music instead of straining to hear it from my quarter-sized speakers on my laptop. The
first thing I did when I got back was crank up this song.
Then I played some of James Taylor's new album - sweet, sweet music to my ears!
Right now, I'm watching the replay on TV of the Otago vs. Wellington rugby match that was played
last night. I didn't get to see the original broadcast because I was THERE! It was quite a tight,
exciting game. With ten minutes left, Otago was down by 5 points after leading most of the game.
After converting a quick penalty kick to close the gap to 20-18 in favor of the Wellington Lions,
Blair Feeney, who kicked all of Otago's points on the night, kicked his longest penalty kick of
the night from about 43 meters with just 1:30 left to play! How exciting is that?!?? The crowd
was going crazy, because this was one of the biggest games of the year and was crucial for both
teams who will most likely end up in the playoffs. I went to the game with Dave, Tim, Tim, Dan,
and Dave's cousin Rueben who was visiting from Invercargill. It was great to see a game at Carisbrook
when I wasn't going into shock from freezing cold temperatures. The first game I went to back in
August was played in freezing temperatures. That game is where the picture was taken of me bearing
Otago's blue and gold (see picture).
The picture at the top was taken (as was last week's pic) on my
journeys all about the south island during my mid-semester break last month. As it says in the
caption, this was our second morning during our four day "tramp" (the common term for hike)
on the Queen Charlotte Track. I really like this picture - especially the reflection in the bay.
That morning, we made coffee cake. You may be thinking "mmmmm", but you probably wouldn't be if
you actually had it. It wasn't too bad, but we ran out of butter, and each small cake was severely
burnt on the bottom and undercooked on the top. And, no, peanut butter does not seem to
work in quite the same way that butter does (yes, we actually did tried it, and burnt peanut butter doesn't
smell as appealing as non-burnt peanut butter). The picture at the bottom was taken on a Wednesday
morning at Starbucks. Paul and I have gone there on most Wednesdays, but we haven't been back for
a few weeks now.
This week also held Chris's birthday. We went to Tokyo Garden, Chris's favorite restaurant, for
dinner on Wednesday and it was pretty good. Chris, Shawn, and I almost always get the Kara-a-ge
Chicken for take-out, but I decided to try the Teppan Pork. I'm so glad I did now, because it was
nothing short of spectacular! Pork and veggies cooked to perfection in a unique, tangy sauce made
for a good meal that I'm doomed to have again in the future. Overall it made for a very fun evening
out with my flatmates and many of their friends who I met for the first time. I sat by Susannah
and we ended up talking international politics. She was asking me what my, and Americans', attitude
was generally toward Germany and Germans. Basically, that chat has motivated me to keep more up
to date about current events around the world, because I really have no idea what's been going on.
Oh well, I really enjoyed myself though and everyone else seemed to as well. Chris was in his
element with his black t-shirt that says "You know you want me." He seemed to have a good time
serving up the chardonnay as well.
Well, that's enough from me for now. I hope everything is going well back home. It's exciting to
see Penn State doing so well and Nebraska still reeling from one of our biggest victories in
recent memory and one of their biggest defeats. I'd like to think that the Steelers will get back
on track this week, but I'm not holding my breath. Drop me an email and let me know how your
week went. Have a good weekend, and God bless!
